FIRST GENERATION

1. (Hans) Michael HIRTLE (1)(2) was born on 14 Dec 1701 in Hochdorf, Göppingen, Württemberg, Germany. (3) 10 December 1691 is the birthdate cited by Canon V.E. Harris, but the shipping list has (Hans) Michael Hirtle as 50 in 1751, hence born in 1701. Friedrich R. Wollmershäuser identified his birth date as 14 December 1701. This is a more reasonable birth date for him, given the dates when his children were born. He immigrated in 1751 to Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia. On board the "Pearl." He died on 10 May 1777 in Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He was buried on 13 May 1777 in Old Bayview Cemetery, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. SOURCES:

NOTES of MODIFICATIONS of the NAME in NOVA SCOTIA

In records of the "Foreign Protestants" in Nova Scotia, one becomes familiar with two varieties of corruption of the original surnames. Most familiar is the case where pronunciation has been more or less maintained and spelling has been altered to
accommodate that pronunciation as the altered spelling might indicate it to English-speaking persons. But there are also instances of the contrary alteration: where spelling has been preserved and pronunciation has changed to what English-speaking
persons made of that."

Spelling.- The HIRTLE family is interesting in displaying both modifications. Original pronounciation in German, might, of course be indicated for an English-speaking reader by some such spelling as HIERT-leh, or HERE-tleh: Now the corruptions to
"Hartling", "Hertling", "Hartlin", etc. Have been spelling alterations with pronounciation following more or less recognizably the original pronounciation. And these names are numerously represented in Nova Scotia today. But we also have,
wide-spread, the name "äHirtle", the spelling of which has been kept unchanged, but the pronounciation of which has no affinity with the original ronounciation, but is what an English-speaker would read from H-i-r-t-l-e, viz: the sound of HURT-il.

From the "Notebook of Canon V.E. Harris on HERTLE, HARTLEY, HARTLIE, HIRTLE, HARTLING Family" in Public Archives of Nova Scotia, Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S.
[transcription by E. Thoresen?]:

Hereinafter now we make our record of Michael Hertli, who has been a settler and Inhabitant here as it is given to us by those who have knowlededge to make it, that he in the year 1691, the 10 December at Hockdrofft, a part of the counrty belonging to Göppingen in the Duchy of Würtemberg, was born of Christian and respectable parents. Then his parents have so after his birth brought him to the Bath of Holy Baptism and gave him to the Learning of all useful Christian Knowledge.

It has pleased the Great God that in the year 1732 he gave himself in the State of Holy Matrimony with Anna Maria Bartlin (who already has gone before him into the Eternal Life), in which state he had with her 8 children of whom 3 died, but 5 are still alive as three sons and two daughters who altogether with many tears bewailed with pain have mourned for their so true and dear Father, of these his children he has also seen and left 37 grandchildren, who also all at the same time, filialy and hartily lamented the loss of their grandfather.

In the year 1751 has he with other settlers come along here to this counrty and to Halifax.

After this it is enough to know that he always has conducted himself towards everyone honestly, truly and servisiably.

He has on account of so great age always from time to time experienced .... and attacks of sickness so that hardly for a month even he has had to be ...... but which he always has borne with much patience and great ..... thereby .... that the good God would take him soon therefrom to the Highest and to Himself which merciful grace help God let him receive, that on the last Sunday, the 10th of the month of May (1777), early in the morning, amidst heartfelt prayers, also in the Service fo the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, joyfully fell asleep, after he brought his age to 85 years, 7 months.

Philip Hartling in "Where Broad Atlantic Surges Roll" identifies his home as "Hochdorf" (upper village) of Gebbingen (probably Goppingen) in Wurttemberg."

He was married to (Anna) Maria BART(IN) on 21 May 1731 in Germany. From a document on display in the DesBrisay Museum. (Anna) Maria BART(IN)(4) was born in 1691. She died in 1757 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She was buried on 17 Sep 1757 in Old Bayview Cemetery, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Recorded in Bell's notes on Hans Michael Hirtle. (Hans) Michael HIRTLE and (Anna) Maria BART(IN) had the following children:

child2 i. Margaretta HIRTLE(5) was born in Aug 1730 in Württemberg, Germany. She died on 18 Mar 1740. Document on display at the Des Brisay Museum, Bridgewater, N.S., supposedly in the hand of Michael Hirtle:

"In the year 1740, March 18th, Margreta died, between the hours of one and two in the morning aged 9 years and 7 months. God give her Eternal Rest."
child+3 ii. (Katharina) Barbara HIRTLE.
child+4 iii. Johann Jacob HIRTLE.
child+5 iv. John Leonard HIRTLE.
child+6 v. Johannes HIRTLE.
child7 vi. Elisabeth HIRTLE(6) was born in 1735/36. She died ante 1760 in Northfield, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. (7) Elisabeth HIRTLE is not listed as part of Michael HIRTLE's family in the victualling lists of 1752 or 1753. This would suggest that Elisabeth HIRTLE may have died earlier than this date. Thoresen shows her as marrying George FANCY, but this would seem to be incorrect. The general consensus (following Bell's notes) is that Susan Elisabeth HERTELL married George Fancy.

child+8 vii. Philip Christian HIRTLE.
child+9 viii. Johanna HIRTLE.
