"Jacob Hartling's farm is shown in the Census of 1851 as consisting of three
acres of improved land. He cut seven tons of hay, and harvested six bushels
of oats, six bushels of potatoes, and three bushels of turnips. He kept ten
neat cattle, three milch cows, and one pig. Jacob Hartling, however, was not
a farmer by trade but instead he was a shipwright, which he listed as his occupation
on the Census of 1838. His Estate Papers reveal that his estate did not exceed
the value of $4,000 at the time of his death. His sons were also ship carpenters.
A schooner owned and undoubtedly built by Jacob, John, and Alexander Hartling
was the _Speculator_, of 99.92 tons. It was constructed at Beaver Harbour in
1867. Another vessel built by Jacob Hartling, Junior was the _J. W. Young_:
