John Christopher HIRTLE ⁽³¹⁴⁾⁽³¹⁵⁾ was born on 23 Jun 1788 in LaHave, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.⁽²²⁾⁽³¹⁶⁾ He was baptized on 10 Aug 1788 in Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.⁽²²⁾ He resided from 1824 in Port Dufferin, Halifax, Nova Scotia.⁽³¹⁷⁾⁽³¹⁸⁾⁽³¹⁹⁾ Listed in the 1827 Census as Salmon River. The name was changed to Port Dufferin in 1899. He died on 27 Nov 1868 in Eastwind, Port Dufferin, Nova Scotia.⁽³²⁰⁾ He was also known as Hartling. Thoresen Family Group Record, 7 February 1964. Ryan's notes: "In 1812 the only record of a marriage was for John Hartling and Mary Hapes, 31 December 1812 @ St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The family left Lunenburg Co. for Port Dufferin during the 1820's, ca. 1824, since John Christopher is a partitioner (sic) for portion of Hale's Grant, Sept. 1824."

[Note: Ryan's notes are a paraphrase of Hartling's account. The exact text reads as follows:]

"This family left Lunenburg County for Port Dufferin during the 1820's, probably in 1824, since John Hartling is one of the petitioners for a portion of the Hale's Grant in September, 1824. His son, Peter Elias, was baptized earlier that year, however, at Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg. Their first habitation after arriving at Port Dufferin was a log cabin." [Children are then listed.]

"In 1827 John Hartling had two acres of clutivated land, harvested one hundred bushels of potatoes, and cut three tons of hay. He kept three head of cattle, six sheep, and two pigs. John Hartling's estate, following his death, did not exceed $1000 in 1867. The inventory of his estate showed that he had seven acres of cultivated land valued at $350, sixty uncultivated acres ($50), a dwelling house ($125), a barn ($75), a store house ($20), a dairy ($15), four cows ($80), three oxen ($96), two steers ($24), a heifer ($10), eleven sheep ($27,50), a cart ($10), a plough ($80), four hoes, and two forks ($1.50), and a chest of carpenter tools ($8), making a total value of $900."

He was married to (Anne) Maria HEBB (daughter of ) on 31 Dec 1812 in St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg, NS.⁽¹¹⁾ Shankle's index lists the marriage as "Johannes Hirtle" and "Mary Hapes". Hartling quotes Canon Harris's notes as saying that it was "Mary Hebb", and assumes that the Hapes is a misspelling of Hebb. (Anne) Maria HEBB⁽³²¹⁾⁽³⁵⁾ was baptized on 2 May 1763. She was born in 1795 in LaHave, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She died on 11 Jan 1869 in Port Dufferin, Halifax, Nova Scotia.⁽³²²⁾ She was also known as Mary Hapes. John Christopher HIRTLE and (Anne) Maria HEBB had the following children:
